“A common challenge for homeowners, contractors, and procurement officers is ordering a ‘Steel Grating’ only to find it doesn’t fit. To avoid these issues, it is essential to know how to accurately measure steel gratings before placing an order.”
At Siam Steel Gratings (SSG), we want to ensure you get a “Perfect Fit” from the very first order. Here is our expert guide to measuring your drainage channels correctly.

1. Understand the Structure: Measure the “Rebate,” Not the “Old Grating”
The most frequent mistake is using an old, worn-out grating as a reference. Over time, used gratings can warp or deform. The most accurate method is to measure the Supporting Frame (Rebate) of the actual drainage channel.
- Measure the Rebate Width: Measure the distance from the inner edge of one support ledge to the other.
- Measure the Clear Span: Measure the internal width of the channel (excluding the support ledges). This is critical for calculating load-bearing requirements, especially for vehicle traffic.
- Measure the Channel Length: Measure the total length of the section to determine the number of panels or the total length of grating required.
Don’t Forget the “Rebate Depth”
The height of your steel grating must be flush with the depth of the rebate.
- If the rebate is 50mm deep but you order a 25mm high grating, the cover will sit too low, causing a dangerous “drop” and heavy impact when vehicles pass over.
- If it’s too high, the grating will protrude, creating a trip hazard. Always measure the depth precisely to select the correct Bearing Bar Height.
3. Consider the Load Requirements
Beyond dimensions, you must identify the Application Type:
- Pedestrian Areas: Standard grating specifications are usually sufficient for walkways and light foot traffic.
- Vehicle Traffic Areas: This requires specialized engineering. Whether it’s for passenger cars or heavy-duty trucks, the mesh size and bearing bar thickness must be calculated based on the Clear Span and the intended weight load to prevent structural failure.
4. Factor in “Installation Clearance”
When ordering custom-made steel gratings, it is standard practice to allow a 3–5mm clearance. This ensures the panels can be easily installed or lifted for maintenance without being too tight, especially after the Hot-Dip Galvanizing process, which adds a slight thickness to the protective coating.
